We are a family owned brewery–Our history of brewing beer is traced back almost 135 years. In 1887 Herman Joseph Berghoff (great-grandfather of Pete Berghoff) founded The Herman Berghoff Brewing Co.
The pre-prohibition story of Berghoff started when Herman Berghoff attempted to get a wholesale license in Chicago after the success of selling his beer outside of the grounds of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. At the time, Chicago required a wholesale license to sell alcohol in bulk. As a work-around, Herman obtained a retail license as a food and drink establishment.
In 1898, he furnished a storefront on Adams and State where he advertised Berghoff light and dark beers at five cents a glass and ten cents a stein– with a free sandwich. Also on offer was Herman’s own label of blended whiskey. The café prospered and there were three locations in the Loop before prohibition hit.
We thought it’d be only fitting to honor this family craft by bringing it in-house when we celebrated The Berghoff Restaurant’s 120th anniversary in 2018 and lovingly named our brew-house Adams Street, where we have called home for 120 years.
1913 marked the year that Berghoff moved down Adams Street, where the bar is today. The original location was demolished in the same year.
